High ISO in those images creates that washed out look... also if you have a 'cheap' UV Lens cover that will also wash out colours.

As stated, keep the ISO below 400 if possible and also dont do large crops. Bird photography IMO is one of the hardest skills to grasp, and usually requires expensive equipment to retain super shart images (like the one on my wish list 300mm f2.8 = $6000.00)

But keep taking the shots, practice pratice and more practice

Basically with a SS under 1/250 it is very hard to have a steady hand to have a sharp details on avian photography.
One of the old rules was to have a speed related to the focal lens used, ej if the focal lens is @ 300mm the ideal speed will be SS1/300, at 250mm SS 1/250 and so on.
In avian photography your set your focus on the eye of the bird and the aim is to have a sharp eye (and good contact) and a sharp bill. For this reason the head turn in the pose of the bird is what makes a good image.

... so attain a speed equal or higher than focal length, you have to shoot wide open.. and DOF becomes small.. so focusing on eyes ensure that sharpness is at least on the eyes. If you dont have sharp focused eyes then the image is wasted ragarless of how sharp other parts of the bird is.

PS: Hope im not coming across as telling you to suck eggs, but ill cover the bases.

Southern Boobook - Long Forest NCR (near Bacchus Marsh)

I also do a bit of wildlife sound recording. Getting to more remote locations was a key motivations for buying a Disco. The link below is to a recording I made a couple of years ago at Gundabooka N.P. near Bourke, NSW.

Some of these photos are fantastic. I'm not going to even pretend I can compete, but these two are a couple of my favourites
