Hard shooting, shade everywhere, branches that made AF go but managed to get close by walking ever so slowly...

PS: Not sure why the images look so pixelated again... doesnt look this bad on my PC

Looks like that it is feeding in a Casurina.
The colors are awesome, you have to persist and soon or later you will have a clear shot.

    Good on you Tim!
The bird in fly at that distance even a 600 mm $ 15000 lens will be too short
The Australian Magpie is very well exposed and with good details.
Try to get a good head turn soo it is a good eye contact.
Also when you shoot birds remember to try to compose the image so the eye of the bird have the "spark"of light in it so it is not a black empty hole.
In this image it is very good.

This little fella hangs around a fair bit. Tonight as I walked across the back yard he swooped very close to my head and made me duck. At first I though he was a bat but found it was the local tawny frogmouth as he landed on a TV antenna.

By the time I got the camera out and better beamer attached he'd taken up a perch on the roof. Only got one shot before he took off over the front yard someplace.

Thanks. First time shooting like this. I was shown that a smallish LED torch held against the foot of the lens is good for illumination and AF. Main light was SB-800 with better beamer. Taken with 80-400 @ 400mm with a bit of a crop in photoshop.
I'm thinking I might make a small bracket up to hold the torch. Maybe simple as a couple of rubber bands.

Found a ringtail possum up the maple tree tonight too. Might have to lure him down with an apple.
