Try to use the old 70-300 at not more than 270mm and with an aperture of about f/6 and the image will be sharper.
The lens performs reasonable well @ 200mm f/7

Thanks. I picked up a Nikon F55 plus 28-80 + 70-300 and 1 filter plus a ProAm bag for $60 at a garage sale. Shoe string budget here.
The F55 seems to function alright. It even came with an unused roll of film.
Might run it through just for the hell of it.

Taken today, size is approx 50% of original as I dont have long enough lens to get close, hence quality looks low and noise is high. Taken at Cape Deslacs National Park at Clifton Beach, Tasmania.

D300s, 240mm, f7/1, ISO 400, SS 1/5000, Aperture Priority

Nice capture, I like the composition and pose.
Very good details to be a big crop. The eye and beak are neat and sharp and that it is what is important in avian photography.
