White Headed Pigeon or "Baldy" as we knew them when I was a boy. We had flocks of hundreds of them come down to eat the corn left in the paddock after it was harvested. They started my interest in native pigeons which are still my favourites 'til this day.

If there is one there will be more about, watch out for Brown pigeons (Brown Cuckoo Dove) as well as they also like the tobacco bush.

    today's shots

they were flighty as hell or hiding so it took a while to get anything i could use.

got a a fairly small pair of birds that i just can not get a useable pic of so far. they are about the size of a finch and are grey with white under they eye about 1/3 of the head height wide.. they look like they may be nesting about 3m up the lillipilly ...

sneaky little sods but at least i didn't nearly trod on the black snake like i did yesterday trying to get pics

luckily it was very well behaved!

had it been a brown there would have been hell to pay....

am pretty sure it's the second biggest red bellied black i have seen.

i sent a pic to the local snake catcher and he was here at break neck speed... even got a ticket for his trouble he tells me

it was a good 90mm girth and way the hell over 2 metres long.

snake catcher was here for 3+ hours looking for him using cameras under slabs and in sheds, down the old well etc etc and even went through next door as well as they have young kids.

didn't find him tho.... so we are all stepping high for a while

Looks like a Spangled Drongo going by the tail and red eye.

Nice Red Belly by the way, I also have an interest in snakes and reptiles and the Red Belly Black is one of my favourites. Nice and placid and very unlikely to do any harm. I sat and watched one for 10-15 minutes swimming in a large puddle one day, I suspect it was catching tadpoles (or looking for frogs). I've talked to a few Herpetologists and although they are known to eat frogs no-one has observed them eating tadpoles before. Another time we came across one, I stood there quietly observing it and it went between my boots and off into the grass after a few minutes.

I definitely don't like browns though, not at all placid and extremely dangerous.
