Thread: a digital camera question

GIMP is free and there are sites that have tutorials on how to use it too.

What sort of things did you want to do with your images?

There is an enormous range of free software available. Some of them just do basic things and are very easy to learn. Others like GIMP are very powerful, but are not easy to learn.

What OS are you using? PAINT.NET is great for Windows and it is free and has lots of plugins to make it a very powerful program.

I just noticed your "easy to use" in parenthesis. That encourages me even more to recommend PAINT.NET. I used it a lot with 12 to 14 year old school children. They had no problems picking it up and many of them liked it so much they downloaded a copy to use at home.

Recommend something for old and normal people

I think that Paint it is a nice software, however if you think that in the future you would like to get soemthing more powerful I woul suggest you to get Photoshop Elements which will be a good start for using Photoshop CS5 in the future..

PAINT.NET is completely different from Paint.

It probably has more in common with PhotoShop than Paint.

Thanks guys for the feedback.

Purchased a card reader, $11.50, and downloaded the first photos from the camera to my laptop today. So my $50-- DSLR works fine. It would not download via cable.

Started to down load photoshop CS5 on friday, but wish I had not, but it put an Ikon on my desktop, and do not know how to stop the download--once it has down loaded I do know how to remove it. It currently tells me I have 42 hours remaining to the download--my current laptop is a Samsung NC10 with 1 gig of ram and an Atom processor. It is downloading at only 9.85 KB/sec.

So it is annoying.

The guy who sold me the camera says I should use "Google Picasa" as my editing program [not sure if I spelt that right], so I might start with that one and play with some others.

Get Nikon Capture NX2.24 which is the only program which reads properly all the Nikon data from your camera.

For PSCS3 to 5 do not bother to download it if you do not have 4 gb ram.

If you do not like Capture NX2 hat use Adobe Lightroom wich it is more friendly with ram

I got Picasa for everyday.

Its good, free and very very easy.
The camera for $50 sounds dubious.

Don't expect miracles in other words.

Picasa will pick all the shots off the card, once downloaded you can manipulate or let the program try "Lucky shot" which does what it thinks is best.
Has usual B/W options.
Oh and PAINT.NET is brilliant, give it a go.
