    That it is how I take avian photography when the light it is not the best or I do not have time to do a setup.
    In ideal conditions I set my camera in SS priority @ 1/250 or over depending on the BG in the composition and ISO 400 or less.
    The details on the birds are awesome..
    Having said that if I have a Nikon 200-400 f/4 glass it will be diferent again

    Part of that is because of the DX sensor giving an effective 1.5x focal length. The D3 variant you are thinking of for tripod and landscape is the D3x which has the same ISO sensitivity as the D300s.
