    lens won't focus

My big lense is a Tamron 70 - 300mm zoom. I was in Brisbane for christmas and everything was working fine, I swapped from my nikkor 24 - 80mm zoom to the big one and it just suddenly doesnt focus? it goes through the focal range and makes the noises of minor focal adjustments but it is out of focus? even on manual it now doesn't focus at infinity and just doesn't seem to get a sharp focus at any range?

    any thoughts?

If you haven't already done so...

Check if there is any switches on the side of the lens, make sure they are firmly in the correct position.
On the camera check the M/S/C focus switch isn't part way between positions and that the ring around the multifunction selector isn't in the lock position.
Check all the contacts on the lens and camera are clean.

Checked everything asuggested before I got on here. Yes it could be Tamron quality - it is a few years old now I guess.

contacts are good, I have tried it in both manual and auto neither focuses at infinity?

short of smacking it against a wall to see if that fixes it - probably not, I am at a loss as to why it would do this? but it has been slightly out of focus since buying the D300s but that really could be Tamron quality as opposed to nikkor quality

So I am stumped, focuses perfectly on macro though?

Ok so I took it into the Camera House in the central Markets in the middle of adelaide. As the guy in there has a reputation for knowing his stuff; he had a look and it worked perfectly??? He did say to give the contacts on the zoom a good clean which I did when I got home and some gunk came off

Zoomed in on the hill the other side of the valley where I live nup crap focus. Backed off to about 250mm zoom focused perfectly? about 270 perfect 300 goona? So for some reason it wont focus on infinity at full zoom?

Could it be the transition from a film camera to a digital that there is a comunication conflict? the Nikkor 28 80mm zoom works perfectly; or could it be a Tamron issue?

Have you accidentally changed the eyepiece focus?

Has the lens work properly in the past coupled to the current body, or is this a first time use with this lens-body combination?

    Cheers
