Its not as exciting as the Tamron, but what else do you expect. My rough estimate would be about 15 years, if not longer, between the two of lens development.

My version is the Mark II so it has the the 7 blade aperture. According to some review sites this was about the best it can get and went downhill from there as Canon seemed to cut this lens down.
Im sure with a little care and practice you could get decent photos out of it.
