Memory cards. Size and speed

With the Nikon D700 it takes two cards. Getting differing stories from many sales people.
For size I am thinking as big as I can afford, 16gb at a minimum, I assume video function would chew into it.

But speed, what is the minimum required so it doesn't hold the camera back.

SanDisk Extreme 16GB CF are what I use, Lexar have an equivalent.
The SanDisk Extreme Pro, whilst faster, are significantly more cost and not worth it IMO but their price is slowly dropping.

Is the camera D700 or D7000

If the D7000 then the SD card would be the same.

Thanks Derek. I followed your lead on a Hannibal awning, may as well get the card you suggest. 16gb is generally big enough?

And yes, It is the D7000.

I do not like to "put all the eggs in one basket) and 2 8gb cards will be my choice.

So perhaps then for similar money, two 8gb San Disk Extreme pro. Perhaps best of both worlds.

I'm with Chucaro on this, 2 x 8gb cards especially if you happen to loose everything off a larger card before backing up.

Pro Wedding photoraphers swap cards often on a job for this reason.

Whilst I agree that putting everything on one card isn't advisable, I would be inclined to use 16GB cards over 8GB's as the file size of 14 bit Lossless compressed NEF files on the D7000 is significantly more than the D300s (I believe they are almost 20M

. Also the D7000 has the ability to run two identical cards like the D3s but using SD. You also have access to overflow and backup options for the two cards.

I used to think that way but I've found I've missed more photos while changing cards than I've ever lost from file corruptions.

Also another point is a 4GB card holds ~450 pics from my old camera. A 16GB card holds ~450 pics from my new camera.

My (sparkly new) D7000 holds 223 images on each 8gb card. This is with 14 bit raw (no jpeg) as the image size.

I decided on two 8GB cards at a decent speed (forget which now...). At some point in the future two 16GB cards will be as fast and the same price and I'll upgrade.
