Dave, THIS SITE is excellent, amount the best and you do not have to invest in a book

Also, because you are a Nikon user THIS SITE will give you very good links.

Now, the money for the books can be used towards a good tripod and head

    Cheers

There are some books that I can recommend for thos interested in nature photography.

One which I have and is very good is
Photoshop for Nature Photographers - A Workshop in a Book by Ellen Anon & Tim Grey
John Shaw's Nature Photography Field Guide [Paperback]

    For close up photography
Digital Photography Expert – Close-up Photography by Michael Freeman

John Shaw's Closeups in Nature (Practical Photography Books)

I have both book by John Shaw, he is among the top nature photographers and are very good books.

    Cheers
