What book(s) would you recommend to someone starting out?
i found one called "Digital Exposure Handbook" by Ross Hoddinott on special at a local bookshop and it has been a revelation to me.
things i was having some trouble getting my head around fell in to place after reading some of it.
haven't finished it yet but i have certainly got my $13 worth out of it imho.

Scott Kelby has a three part boxed set entitled "Digital Photography" which I just purchased for around $40. For me it was worth the read - it simplifies the process somewhat with examples instead of just theory. Google it for a review.
Dave I kid you not get a subscription to digital photography+design...
Its a really really well written magazine....I'm a subscriber

How to use your camera/composition/exposure?
Ansel Adams and Edward Weston both wrote books worth reading.

Ansel Adams also wrote a series of books - The Camera, The Negative, The Print. All for film, but lots still relevant.

For exposure, look for Zone System, and Beyond the Zone System. Madly obsessive, but gives you a very good idea of how to work out what you want to see and don't want to see.

If you're looking at learning to shoot full manual then I'd suggest 'Understanding Exposure' by Bryan Peterson to help get the basics down. It has a stack of visual examples and is well written. It's a very popular and would probably be available at the local library.
ordered a copy of that, thanks
thanks for all the replies.. lots of useful info ......

Not a book, but, I was looking at apps a few days ago and noticed that there were several available for the specific camera I'm looking at. Probably not as good as a book and some were $37 so not cheap. But if they are any good I would be keen as I will probably most times have my iPhone with me. It did look very thorough and camera specific would be handy for me.
