The D60 is a very good learners camera, and if you decide to upgrade in the future, everything you've learned on it will translate upwards pretty easily. If you can master fully manual mode, you can photograph pretty much anything, but don't forget the A and S settings too, as they'll make life a lot easier for you. One thing that took me a long time to get used to, or at least remember, was that ISO is now a variable setting, definitely worth taking into account in low light shots.

For what you are doing, I'd recommend shooting in RAW mode, and adjusting and converting on your computer afterwards.

Also, grab a few copies of N-Photo magazine - you can buy them, or you can find them on your favourite torrent sites. They offer very comprehensive tutorials for beginners and experts alike. Well worth a read.
