We have had a canon IXUS 50 for almost 8 years. Takes great pics for a P&S, Still going well, and still on the original batteries.

That's the first thing that failed/jammed up with dust on my current camera so that suits me down to the ground.

Sony have a little camera that is great. It is waterproof, and shock proof and is really easy to use.

    Sony DSCTX20B 16.2MP Digital Camera - Digital Cameras - JB Hi-Fi - Smashing Prices!

I've seen them for $199. I purchased mine a little while ago for $450 (then a new release). It does really great low light, auto stitching panorama, movies the works and the image quality is great.

Mine has had a very hard life, its battered and has been dropped many times. Never missed a beat, and still waterproof. Takes great shots underwater too.
Hope it's a good camera, I bought one for my girls yesterday on the strength of above and have posted it to them, they should get it today, so will see results later.

It was $186 from the Sony store at DFO. My first digital was a Sony. A whopping 3.2 megapixel. Was very happy with that camera for years.

I just bought one too, but paid $399

Nice and easy to use, little instructions flash up on the screen which is good while you're getting used to it, and its reasonably chunky so doesn't get lost in your hands good like tiny ones do.

You get a bit of washout towards a bright cloudy sky, and some of the other colouring isn't the best. But this is typical of all compacts I think.

I bought it as it appeared to be the best of the 'Tough' style, (it has an F2.0 lens), and to supplement my Nikon D90 when I don't want to lug an SLR around.

Warning with the GPS setting on, it kills the battery pretty quick.

It took an arm twist to get that price.

You're right though, I looked a quite a few cameras and I thought this was the best of the waterproof tough type cameras also. The next one down in the range I thought was really good also.
    Cheers

i think they will be very happy. Since I've had it, i have hardly used any of my dSLRs and not even touched my medium format kit!

Damn. It took my wife three days to get to the post office to get the express post parcel for my daughters, but after all that the camera is not charging, and they cannot use it.
I'll check it in10 days when they get back to me,but I can't see what they're doing wrong. Must just be a dud camera and I'll have to try replace it when they return.

I know this sounds like stating the obvious but get them to make sure the battery is in the correct way around. On some P&S the battery can be put in upside down and/or back to front.

And sometimes the battery has a small piece of plastic to isolate the terminals when packaged - make sure it has been removed before trying to use or charge the camera.
