Not many people are aware that colour photography goes back to the mid nineteenth century, although successful results were not really feasible until the end of the century, and only became practical (but still only just) in the early twentieth - i.e about the time of these photos.
The first commercially successful colour system was the Autochrome process in 1907, but still very expensive.
The first "consumer" system was Kodachrome in 1935, but this remained very expensive compared to B/W until the 1950s.
