no it has to be in a housing its the housing that makes it water proof.

the hero 3's are basically the same as a hero 2 just with the wifi built in and not an ad on.
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

Just been through all this and bought a silver Hero 3.
Hours of research led me to thinking the black is good is you are into serious quality videos and have the computing power to edit the files.
The silver will do me fine. Can control via the app easily and will hook up to power supply in car if battery proves an issue.

Nearly bought the Drift HD ghost though, it is a good unit.
If i was bike riding (pedal or motor) I reckon I would have gone the Drift, it fits better on a helmet and has better battery life.

The price was around the same for both.

Oh and the Go Pro site costs around $80 to ship to Australia.

Just something you might not know, the silver edition does not come with the remote, only the black edition does, it's between $90 to $100 dearer, the remote separate is $120, which makes the silver edition dearer when you add the purchase of the remote afterwards.

Managed to get my hands on a Black GoPro 3 last week - they're quite hard to get ahold of at the moment, not many have stock. I didn't realise that your average monitor won't display over 1080. Soon found that out though when I tried to play back a vid at higher res. Doh! Probably should have researched it a bit more and saved my self a hundred bucks with the Silver version ...

I raised a post some time back about the merits of the Black v Silver v White in respect of the frames per second. I have since chatted to a friend who manages the video equipment at ABC TV. ABC and most TV stations transmit at 26 fps. The white and Silver are 30 fps. Black is 60 fps. I posed the Q to him is it worth the money for the extra fps. His opinion was, in basic terms, a waste of capacity for the average user. To step up to 60 fps you need a PC with storage, processing power and software to really make full use of the extra fps ie slow motion etc. The technological race of the Black model is beyond the average PC set up and from some posts below, the TV as well. Like owning a Ferrari and driving it at the 60 kmh speed limit. You will never experience its full potential.

As for using it as a camera, the lack of buttons and need for extra pieces of equipment renders it into the "PIA" category and most people will opt for the point and shoot camera for convenience.

The Q then becomes whether the accessories you want makes it cost effective to buy the silver over the white. Until the rest of the technological chain catches up to the Black or you have the set up already, it's merely ego driving the decision.

that's my 2 bobs worth. MLD
