I think it really depends most on what you are going to photograph most.
As you pointed out the crop factor of DX gives you great extra reach.
About a year ago I went FX (D750).. I love the images it produces and low light is amazing. But I do miss the longer reach with things like birds.
I kept my D7000 so that's my back up and go to for the longer stuff now. One day I'll probably replace it with a D7200 or it's successor, but I'm not in a great rush as the 7000 still takes images I am still very happy with. and the body lay out of the two cameras is close enough that switching is easy.
If you yearn for FX and don't do most of your photography at the long end, why not pair your FX choice with the D300 for long stuff?
