Mate, they tell me the secret to taking great photos.. is take lots and lots of crap ones.....

I'm still working on it... and occasionally one or two work.

But the way I figure it - as long as you are enjoying - who cares

I use my Land Rover and my Nikon to keep me sane.... with varying degrees to success

Nothing to it Debruiser, you've only got to get three things right ..................... composition, lighting and focus to get the 'perfect' photo. After 60 odd years I'm still working on the first one.

Mark has said "Take lots of crap photos" .... That's how I kinda learnt, eventually the law of averages will produce a couple of good one.

You've already shown in your images that you understand composition, you now need to use it to an even greater effect. I always look for leading lines to draw the eye into a scene, use the rule of thirds, get up early for the sunrise or stay out later for the sunset and the golden hours for the best light.

Don't be afraid to copy someones composition or location, imitation is a worthy form of flattery.

Crack a beer and get on Youtube to learn techniques.

All in all, drive your passion for creating images, be proud of what you can produce.

And most of just keep getting out and shooting.

Thanks Dave, I was trying to wait for the later part of the sunset in those pics... but it was FREEZING! so I gave up and headed back to the camp fire! I try to work the 3rds thing... sometimes it comes off for me... I've not tried the leading lines thing..... I'll have to look into that.

    cheers

Another tip is to see if there is a local photography group for where you live on Facebook. Join it and you'll be able to see where all the local photography spots are. You can also use Google images to see photographs of your local area and see how they have composed the images. I did this to great effect with my journey in capturing images.

Great idea DB..... you remember a few years back you tried to get a thing together with a pro in Broken Hill?

If we started small like a camp trip or something... maybe we could work back up to something like that - if we can find a location that works for a big enough group of us...
