Looking at eBay etc the price doesn't look to bad, but...
For $950 you can get a new D3000 (basically replaces D60) with 18-55 & 55-200 new kit lenses and that's not a grey import price either.
As for what to look for.
Dust bunnies or other issues on the sensor. Take a picture and download it and look for anomalies.
Marks and fungus on the lenses.
Is the battery on the way out?
Shutter life (D60 is good for about 20,000 shots). The shot count information is embedded in the EXIF data of a picture.
D60 is a good camera, basic, but very good. I know several people with them and all are very happy.
Personally I'd be looking at the D90 but it is a much more expensive camera and significantly better.
