Thats a good idea, the marine reverse osmosis sytems aren't all that bulky IIRC, I'd have no hope fitting one to my RR, but a 110 yes would be invaluable in some places. They are also good at filtering bacteria etc AFAIR?
Nothing worse than stomach bugs on holidays, especially with children

Got any pics etc of the one you are thinking of? Links? Probably get one in the camper trailer though....

Just be aware that RO/Desal water is VERY aggresive. The pumps and equipment supplied to the Navy by Grundfos are titanium, which is the most resistant, and even they get eaten out by the water.

Water has a memory effect, and whatever you pull out of it, the water will try and take back................ from your pump, tank, kettle, radiator, engine block......even your body.

It's not recommended for long term use. For emergency though, it should be fine.

I'd looked at a few Katadyn units online but even the manually operated ones are upward of $1800.

Not sure if it's a ****take or not, but I've heard in situations where there is only sea water, you can rectally ingest the water as a means of safe drinking.

Rectal hydration isnt a **** take but you cant do it with salt water
you can safely metabalise about 1/2 a liter to a liter of normal sea water a day... but its not good for you as the salt dehydrates you and causes your body to need more water.... IF your activity level and dehydration rate allows you to survive on less than about 1/4-1/3 of this quantity of water then for a short time you can survive on seawater (good luck being in that circumstance) mostly you can use it to extend your existing water supply. you cant take your whole liter of salt water in one hit its 1l/24 hours. most surfers ingest more than that per hour surfing.

DR bombard (a frenchman) survived a 60+ day float with no provisions other than what the ocean provided but that included plankton, fish rain water and salt water.

When I circumnavigated we only drank watermaker water. No health problems at all. Probably only fault was that the water is too pure and had no taste. I only ran the watermaker well offshore in clean waters, so consequently the pre filters lasted a very long time. Its very power hungry and also from memory used quite a bit of water and the end to reverse flush everything clean.

yes but I read his kidneys failed soon afterwards.

correct but in part he also refused advanced medical assistance yes, if he hadnt been so stubborn about prooving his point he wouldnt have pushed the salt water intake so much, and his kidneys wouldnt have failed in the first place.

but the important thing is that he did survive to make it to dry land, and in this day and age, if you can make it to land and you can be found by someone with comms your chances of survival post ordeal are a hell of a lot better.
