    Tent Cots

My son and I are planning some weekend fishing trips with one night camping out. The first of these trips we did last weekend and decided we can't be bothered putting up the tent for one night and are considering buying two tent cots which we've seen in Rays Outdoors and look better than swags. Does anyone have any experience with these?

good providing you get the good quality ones and they also tend to get very cold if the wind is up (the wind goes right under them) Ive also seen people flip them on uneven ground when moving around at night.

cheap ones have all the problems you'd expect to find from low quality, the leak and the zips bust....

IMHO a mozzie dome with a fly a decent bedroll and a sleeping bag is a better investment unless you need the ability for it to all be up off of the ground.

a decent swag an a couple of tarps is even better.

I was looking at these Tent cots and my main worry was condensation, nylon type material seems to be compatible with condensation and every time you rolled over you would get a shower.
I have a canvas swag with 3 poles that hold the canvas off you and it is great, a bit warm though, but I can throw back the top cover and just have the midge proof mesh over the top. I am sick and tired of trying to get up off the ground of a morning and decided to get a camp stretcher to put the swag on, but I needed one wide enough to take the poles of the swag, I have one on order, it is 1.4m wide and will easily accomodate the swag, The swag was under $200 (OZ Trail/OZ Tent brand, Mitchell) the camp stretcher is $129 and folds up small. Also consider a Tarp, say 10'x10' attached with velcro to the roof of your vehicle to give some protection from rain/dew/sun, makes life a bit easier, Regards Frank.

Do a search. It's been discussed previously.

Looks like whatever you use a tarp over the top seems to be the go, so at least you can get out in the rain without getting soaked. With this latest 90 I had to go without the roof rack as it is also my daily drive and I need to be able to fit in caprk parks with a 2.1m height bar.

Anyone got any ideas about fixing a tarp to the side without drilling too many holes

Go to a canvas supplier/sewing type place and have a look at some "caravan track". You should be able to come up with some form of easily removable gutter mounted device to serve your needs.

Get some velcro strip and glue it to the roof top above the curve down to the gutters, it is low profile and no one will even know they are there and sew the other half to the edge of your tarp, Regards Frank.

A mate of mine who has been going bush for many years swears that this is the best way to get a good nights sleep. So I have invested in a sturdy camp stretcher that doesn't wobble around to go with the swag, yet to try it out though.

    cheers,
    Terry

I've been using my tentcot for the last year. Yes can get chilly with the breeze underneath camping in (qld) winter but a camp/yoga mat on the bottom insulates well. Have had the condensation issue once but most times i setup the tentcot and a oztrail compact gazebo over top and is a nice quick comfy setup for a night away.
