    Iceboxes

I'm looking at getting an ice-box next week but with all the variety out there it's quite overwhelming! I've also struggled to find any kind of 'reviews' or 'tests'.

The only review I do remember was in a caravan and rv magazine a while back and from memory, the coleman was the best. They did a proper test with ice etc., leaving it in the sun and opening and closing it every now and then.

Has anyone had any experience with the coleman ones? The other ones I looked at were the EvaKool ones, not sure how good they are though. They seem quite well made though and I have heard good things about their FridgeMate fridges.

Any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated,

    Cheers.

    Nathan.

50L is great 'lil ute esky for parties and barbies.

Very happy with there service and price.

Cheers for the recommendation mate. How long do you reckon they would keep stuff cold for? For me at the moment it's also going to serve as a temporary car fridge, until I can afford a real one.

Yeah I have heard a lot of good things about them. Sort of leaning towards the Evakool at the moment unless anyone else has any advice.

I wish I could remember where the article saying the Coleman kept ice for longer was though.

It really is dependent on what you do with them.
The 200L esky with 5 x 10kg bags of crushed ice will chill +/- 70kg of warm fish and keep them ice cold (ice remains) for a whole weekend. How does that relate to keeping food cold I dunno?

The smaller 50L is great for a drinks fridge, put ice & beer in it stays cold!

When it all boils down to it an esky is foam and a water proof cover. The unreals are 40mm thick foam in poly case with double thickness lids, good strong hinges and good drains. I have been impressed with the unreals build and attention to details (slope built in floor for drain, rope stops to protect hinges (always a weak point).
I prefer poly to fibreglass for general getting chucked around toughness.

Try using some salt (pool salt is fine) with your ice it makes things super chilly and speeds cool transfer from ice to your drinks.

I have a 60l techni-ice ice box that i bought before my fridge. Only cost $99 and works great for the money. And since most of our camping is in the Vic high country, ice last forever!!!

    Eva Kool

I have an Eva Kool and it certainly is a great product - easily keeps ice for 3-4 days + but that depends I guess on a lot of factors including what was put in it, the actual ice block used, how often it is opened, drained off etc.

I would be surprised if the Coleman really outperformed one of these types of iceboxes. Maybe one limit is the weight - mine is 72 litres and you definitely know it when it is full and you are shifting it around.

One suggestion - I bought mine as a factory "second" with just a couple of small scuff marks on the front decal and side of the lid. This knocked about 30% off the price and would look no different to a cooler that had been used once or twice on a typical camping trip. Quite a few marine and camping places around Brisbane sell these so-called "seconds" - not sure where you hail from.

    Cheers,

I've had a 90L Evakool fiberglass box for about 15 years. A couple blocks of ice in the bottom and would still have ice left after 5-7 days in the middle of summer in Tamworth. Bloody brilliant imo

Cheers for all the responses guys, had a look at an Evakool in a shop and I'm fairly happy with how it's constructed. Hinges look easily replaceable etc.

Might try and score a factory second if I can.

look at the evakool and have a look at the engel site as you can buy a cooler unit you can fit to the kooler later down the track
