    Conditioning Canvas

I just become the proud owner of a new Oztrail Tourer 9 tent.

However, I am a bit stuck as one thing I forgot to consider when buying the tent was the initial conditioning of the canvas.

The instruction manual tells me to pitch the tent and wet it down with a garden hose but unfortunately not only do I not posses as garden hose but I don't have anywhere to pitch the tent while doing the conditioning since I live in an apartment block. No-one else I know who lives locally has a garden either.

How do I go about conditioning the canvas without being able to pitch the tent and hose it down?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I'm afraid you can't season the canvas unless you wet it but even if you don't season it now the worst that can happen is the first time you use it and it rains you may get a wet arse, but after that you will be fine.

    try a bucket

    Hi sam_d

Hang the tent under something like a clothes line and throw a few buckets of water over it.

Make sure its dry before you pack it away, otherwise the canvas could discolour with mould growth.

That tent will be fine after 1-2 nights out.
You will get some condensation on the canvas and this will seal it up i would think.
The canvas in that tent has waterproofing agent saturated throughout the Canvas.
If you stay in a caravan park you can set it up and give it a hosing down then go off and do some sight seeing for the day and it should be dried out and water tight (ish).

Water will most likely ingress through seams especially when pitched tight.

I pitched mine when new and hosed down then dried out on sunny day and repeated this about 4 times. It got better each time. Then rubbed bees wax on all seams and used hair dryer to melt wax into seam. So far so good. I have an older style canvas with no waterproofer impregnated into canvas.

    Cheers
