The centre hoop is a bit of a pain to put in and is not really necessary. If I'm staying put for a few nights I'll use it, otherwise not.

The day I bought it I set it up on a veranda and got in to see if it would be claustrophobic or stuffy (never had a swag before) and promptly fell asleep for 3 hours.

I have a number of 1,2 and 3 man tents yet this now gets used more than half the time, especially when working out in the sticks (fish surveys).

So, to those in the know ... What's warmer in cold weather .... a basic swag like a Saul (with good woolen blanket) laid out on a tarp, or something like the Oz Mitchell with a sleeping bag ? Having never used one, one reads stuff online, and some say the airspace in a dome type won't keep you as warm as a close fitted tradition type swag that's more like being in a sleeping bag ... ??? The simplicity of the Saul or SFTH types appeals .... Throw it down last minute, crawl in and sleep (and if it's wet most times it will be under the foxwing awning) ,plus it can be used easily indoors, or on a verandah, etc ...

Mrs F says a big NO to a swag for her accom's (even though she's never tried one - she's the RV-5 & queen double height air mattress, which by my reckoning is really comfortable) but for 1-2 nighters just for me, a quick simple swag has some appeal. Have a Malamoo 3 sec tent, but then it requires an air mattress (so that means an electric air pump), then a sleeping bag ..... ?

Seems many here have given the Saul good wrap (scuse' the pun), but what about insect screening ? Yes, Saul has a separate mozzie net (how hard is it to keep the net in place as you're climbing into the swag ? I can live with the insects issue using a separate net when required.

I'm leaning towards a Saul (the SFTH one would be better with a thicker mattress ... Add a mattress and it's the same $ as a Saul)

... or for about the same $ I can get a double Mitchell and encourage the handbrake to try swagging ... and if that's a blue duck, then I'm swagging in luxury with a little more setup time. I see what a lot of people say .... A dome swag is basically a mini tent ... Not a swag ... And we already have a RV-5 which I reckon would take about the same time to setup as a Mitchell for a quick overnighter ....

i dont see the point in using a sleeping bag in a swag, sheets, blankets, donnas, pillows are the go. you have all the room of a swag than you restrict yourself in a sleeping bag

i have only ever used flat swags over the last 20 years with no mozzie nets and reckon i can regulate the temp better than a sleeping bag by always having sheets, blanket and doona. the temp depicts how many layers, the layers that are no required go under the mattress for extra padding. insect control can be a problem for this reason i am keen to get a custom double swag made as i have tested my mates and i recon its the go.

the biggest problem with swags is the room they take up, esp. when you have four up on the roof rack.

The double top layer of the saul seems to give added warmth too.
