    wooden dinner plates

i have just knocked up 10 x iron bark dinner plates which we are going to use for a dinner party next weekend.........for future use i might route a juice catcher around the edge otherwise meal time might get messy.....

my question is, what is the best way to prepare dinner plates prior to there first use.

i have searched the net and it appears grape seed oil is popular along with mineral oil. i was going to use olive oil but it seems this should be avoided. any other ideas?

i have been using wooden cutting boards for years and am pretty comfortable no bacteria can live in dry wood, we normally give them a quick wash in mild soapy water and leave them to dry in the rack........we have just started to rub salt into the moist wood to draw any bacteria out, picked this up from a celebrity chef

    Hi,

I'd be looking at some of the natural oil used for traditional finishes
First one that springs to Ming is tung oil which is a natural nut oil, used for floor, benches, chopping boards, etc.
I found organoil on the net which claims to be fully natural, check closely
That they haven't used any solvents, polymers etc to improve drying time, resilience, etc before you stick it on the table wear

I don't know if organ oil is 'food safe'. I use macadamia oil on my chopping boards. I personally wouldn't use anything with mineral oil in it. There's a recipe for a wax at the end of that link , but with mineral oil in it, as I've said, I wouldn't. A more suitable waxy finish if you want to go that way, would contain equal parts by weight of bees wax (grated to speed melting) and linseed oil, with a bit of gum terpentine. Heat till the beeswax is melted, add the linseed oil then add a little of the gum terpentine till you can smell it ,but not to strong or it will flavour your food. Gum terpentine can be difficult to get, but it's worth it. It adds a wonderful fresh clean smell to the wax. Experiment on some scrap wood to balance the ingredients.
