Butane stoves are also smaller and lighter to pack.

Butane stoves are great, I use them on most trips.

However, one thing to be aware of is, Butane has a freezing point of about 3 degre C. So if it is somewhere cold you plan on going......LPG is your friend.

And they don't even have to be that cold before performance drops badly in my experience. A bit of wind chill and a partially empty cannister and you'll be lucky to burn yourself
If you can keep them warm and out of the wind they work fine - but I still prefer my dual fuel Coleman.

Umm, yeah, you mean boiling point.

But I agree, it won't like the cold. You need to cuddle it warm before it will cook your meal for you.

Even a propane (regular LPG) stove will die down in a frost unless it runs a pressure regulator. Without a regulator all of these cheapie stoves run a tiny restrictor jet that is usually blocked up by the time you really need it, like during a power failure in mid winter.

we used a butane burner they when we traveled for 3 months and it was really good easy to clean and light and compact. They are also very efficient and cheap.
We used one most nights in Canberra in winter and had no problems.
The only downside is that it has one burner opposed to a 2 burner gas stove but i would sooner get 2 of these butane burners of a 2 burner gas stove.
I really do not have anything bad to say about them

I currently have a 2 burner camping stove and a 4KG gas bottle. It's still half full because it only get occasional use, but now it's past the bottle check/expiry date. For the cost of having it checked, filled, etc, compared to $15 for butane stove and refills for $5-$10 I can't see why I wouldn't go butane.

Butane, or not to butane...

They are fantastic if you are primarily wanting to boil water and simply stuff like that.

I have found that cooking over is difficult and temperature regulation is generally not great but they are very handy for that quick boil of a billy.

With care they work in cold temps but like most have said the performance falls away quickly in the cold and when you want that warm drink first thing in the morning the can take a long time to generate enough heat..

The other option is to purchase a small gas stove from a camping store, they are even more compact and use a higher quality fuel, but obviously are more expensive.

For the price these cheap butane stoves are very easily justified as part of your camping kit.

Thanks all. I'm feeling impulsive, so at this rate I'll be going via BigW on my way home from work and purchasing 2 of them.

From some searching on google it seems I should be aiming to get the refills for around $2 each. Any suggestions where to get them for that price? (I'll try BigW but I'm not holding my breath).
