Which fridge???

I'd second the vote for a Bushman's - I've had mine for 2 years now and love it for the following reasons:

Low low current draw (2.5 days of straight running without charging on a 50ampHr battery, and versatility due to the changing lids which means the difference between being able to have the fridge in the car daily and the blind hiding it, then the big lids on when going away :)

Also met a guy the other day who spotted me loading mine in Coles that asked whether I liked it - I replied yes of course and he proceeded to tell me that his has been running for 6 years straight in the back of his Troopy!!!! :o

Had my Bushman for 4 years. No problems (changed plug to merit as the cig plug dropped out a few times) it's connected to the Thumper and Never falters.

Would love to have an 80 litre version though. Even with the 52 litre collar and lid, the family of 6 Fill it and unload it quickly...

I ended up getting an Evakool.

I have one of their fibreglass eskies and they are just unbelievably good. It'd keep an icecube all summer. It was actually a hard decision to justify buying a fridge, but I only had to convince myself, so I got the same esky but with a fridge/freezer unit in it. Too easy. Danfross, so a great reliable and efficient motor also. Still going probably 10 years down the track and still loving it.

The one problem... the lid catches are rubber and if you neglect them enough you can damage them.

Yep Mate what you have is the real deal those fridge mate ones are not in the same class as yours.I've had my 60 litre now since 2004.It runs on an oily rag and the one time it needed fixing ,a fan solder cracked it was fixed quickly and efficiently .Excellent service and last but not least ( as you say) it is a true fridge/freezer not like most others that operate in one or the other modes not both at the same time

We run an ARB 40 liter in the D4 all the time (wife uses it for the shopping) and I would highly recommend it.

Not bad for an 8 year old fridge... ;)

I did a lot of research and felt it would be ideal for what I wanted, it's exceeded what I expected from it by miles.
It runs 24 hrs a day on economy and the thermostat set at 2 out of 9 (9 is coldest) for lunches and drinks at work and it doesn't matter what the temp is outside. I didn't drive the car over x-mas for 2 days and forgot about it running the whole time, surprisingly it never drained the battery and the beers were ice cold.

I still have running (since 1989) my 39 litre Engel, replaced the lid seal once and not much more. Still works, but has always drawn much too much current for my liking. I ended with a 25 litre waeco which fitted behind the rear seat in a Suzi Jimny, and now sits behind the driver in my LR3. The Engel now only gets used on long trips for fifo usage and then shut down.

More recently I have been thinking along the lines of an evakool fibreglass unit and possibly using a PORTABLE 12VDC ICE MAKER, if I could find one at a reasonable price. The idea is the this box is the long term freezer.

Has anyone gone this route ??

+1 for Bushman. Had mine for about 5 years now, it's never missed a beat.

I had a old engel it ran 24/7 i two rollux,s then my Defender total 12.5 years, only had the power supply replaced and had gas checked at that time as well. It was a mate that had one at the time I first bourght mine and he had had it for years then with no problems, infact he still has it in his old Nissan.
I sold that fridge with the Defender now in my D3 it was a easy choice for me the compressor has only one moving part and the new ones draw very little power and it had proved itself I cant think of to many other brands that were around back then.
Engel for me.
Its a personal choice really as they all seem to run and last, so its down to size/shape/power draw/colour :)
