    Lightbulb Which fridge???

I know this has been done a million times before, but my head is spinning trying to figure it out.

I am looking for about 47-50 ltr primarily partly because that's my price zone and partly because that's about the biggest I think I an practically fit in the car with all the other stuff you need to get in there for a family of 4.

So the options seem to be

Engel 40lt For about $1200 (engel next size up is about 60 litre for about $1500)
Seem to have a great repulsion and solid as, but more limited sizes and more expensive.

ARB 47lt for about $1200. Read good reviews and seem to have good service.

Weaco 49lt for about $1100,slightly cheaper and has the ability to operate two zones fridge and freezer.

Evakool fiberglass 47lt for about $1100. Bit more mixed reviews and odd shape.

Evakool koolmate 50 lt for $700, more traditional shape, haven't heard much about them. Very cheap but is there a reason for that?

Anyone have anything useful to offer to help me make up my mind?

i have come to the conclusion that all brands of fridges seem to just work,.........for the amount of them in use there seems to be very little reports of faults or failures

really comes down to your budget (most important) v size (available space) v brand name (if you are that way inclined)

i know of at least five different brands used by close friends and family, seven fridges in total and they all perform as expected

without the thread becoming a brand battle i will only comment on what i have used............

i have two engles (32L and 40L) and am happy with my purchase, if i needed to replace one i would more than likely go with the same brand again as one is >10 years old and the others is probably 7 years old.......plenty of commentators will say they are too expensive, they dont run a danfos compressor, they dont have low voltage cut out blah blah blah but they probably haven't owned one. i have been camping with others that have other brands and they seem to be happy campers....

go with your gut feel and there is a pretty good chance your choice will serve you well

oh i have a company vehicle with a trailblazer in it..these are also a good piece of kit but they take up a lot of room

    Hey mate,
Here's a good thread on the topic.

As mentioned in a post in the above, I can send you a good article comparing all brands if you like.

    Cheers!

    BUSHMAN.
I have had two Engels and one Waeco and my Bushman walks all over them and talk about versatile. They come with a normal lid, a high bottle lid and a separate collar, set them up to what ever you need at the time. First time I went away I used the collar and the high lid, next I only needed the high lid as I wasn't carrying as much. Local Company (Melbourne) and designed by a fridge mechanic and made of course in China. One of the best back up services you could ever wish for if needed. They did a test a while ago with the Aust Defence Forces and the Bushman walked away from the all the other contenders. I think from memory Engel failed miserable with Waeco not far behind...Check them out...

    Cheers

I like the look of that, very flexible. But who sells them, the bushman site says buy online, but don't seem to have any way to purchase them.

Wait for a great deal. No need to pay full retail. Eg. Wait for a 20% off day or a show special.
Will the fridge stay in the car all the time when you are on trips? If so, consider buying or building a slide.
Most people will recommend what they already have, all the features are pretty similar. I went for an Engel due to the metal exterior. Size sounds about right. We use a 40l for a family of 5 and it is a good size. Not too big or heavy and with smart buying...think square items..it holds plenty.

    Hi Andrew,

We have had a 60 litre Evakool Travelmate for three years, excellent fridge and uses bugger all power. Evakool direct have good deals on them at the moment, only $599 for a 47 litre model including free postage, you can buy two Evakools with cases for less than the price of one Engel.

    Products - Evakool
