Paper plates and plastic forks from the plastic supermarket bag on the back seat.
No washing.
No repacking.
G'day peoples,
Have searched the net high and low wondering the best ways to pack all your gear into your car/trailer etc for when your off camping. I'm referring to utensils, pots, pans, plates, cups etc.
At present, we have a couple of tubs we pack, have never broken anything, but it always seems messy and untidy with no rhyme nor reason to anything.
The ultimate test I guess will be next week when we take off for our week and a half trip. We had this same set up when we spent 10 days in Tassie, and I remember being frustrated with it, but ultimately, it did work.
But I would like some ideas on how you guys do things, what you use to make packing easier, more compact maybe.
I have been thinking about making a unit similar to those you can buy online which are about the size of a large esky with doors that open out to the front to form a "table top", which you can then access inside to get various things, including condiment's etc. My biggest issue with this could be weight, as in getting it in and out of the car. I did wonder if I could base it on a fridge slide to make it easier, remembering I'm working out of a 110 dual cab ute.

best solution i have seen is the drifta car back combo, search for fluids pics on here, very neat.
for us preping for simpson trip from camper trailer to tent and car only we need to reorganise our gear but we have a storage drawer setup and a few tubs should work it out.![]()
I found fixing fridge and drawer to wheel well height and floor in rear seat from seat base to channel behind front seat which enables hi lift, tools and recovery gear and tent poles under false floor centralising weight. 3 10 litre water jerries, spares and air pump slide in under rear seat.
The remainder in tubs for galley/ kitchen and food. Clothes in soft waterproof 'sailing bags' to protect from dust and water whilst minimising what is brought.
The problem I have always had in 4x4and sailing is your 'system' or how it works, accessing the everyday essentials without having to unpack everything else and you only sort this out by doing it.
I have spare cold weather clothes like thermals and a coat, gloves ect Cryovacced and stored away.
In the end after 2 Counties and 2 Deefers that I have reduced the fixed set up in the rear in particular as it was inflexible and restrictive where different items were required on different trips.
And when you get home the area can be used for everyday purposes.
I have found 'nally' tubs great, strong with good lids and straighter sides so they don't waste space. Some are 25 years old. The newer 45l Eskisehir are cheap, dust proof and make good kids seats.
In the end it's whatever works but the only time I preferred a total custom rear fit out was previously when I thought I was old enough to have a D1 and of course I tried to take the same stuff I fitted in the Deefers....So I went back to a Deefer.
G'day Liam, Brad,
Yeah, I quite like the Drifta set up, and there's a site on the net with various versions of this too Which is where I get my thought from.
As for the rear seat area, we need to keep the seat, although it may end up being a shelf type arrangement with good padding for the dog.
However there will be a water tank under the seat, and as for the floor area, I'm not sure yet, but I'm expecting storage of other stuff, not food stuff.
We have been through this too.
I now run a day bag/box and a larger camp crate.
The day kit is cups, frypan, kettle, plate, egg flip, tongs, cuttlery, tea/coffe/choc,salt&pepper, paper towl and plastic bags.
On big trips it's straped on the fridge so grab it and your into the fridge, no unpaking 1/2 the rig.
We don't wash them after lunch, into a plastic bag and wash them with dinner dishs.
The larger crate has all the cooking gear at one end, food ect. is packed in the remainder of the crate.
This can then come out for long stays as it has a lockable lid, o'nite it 's held open by a strap off the dog cage.
In a stack..
Upside down campoven lid into which the campoven sits.
A trivit and all our bowls sit in the oven.
Over this the 2 dish/hand bowls sit.
Into them is the plates and spare cups wraped/packed with spare tea towels.
We have second frypan upside down on this stake covered with a hand towel.
The thing I've found is when washing up put it back where it goes straight away, once it spreads out you loose stuff
And no, I havn't finished packing either![]()
i use the roller under-bed storage boxes. They fit well next to the fridge and a stack of 4 reaches just under seat back height. 2 carry all the plates/bowls/billies/frypans/knives/foks etc, the other 2 carry the non-perishable food. Folding chairs slot down the side, folding table on top, pillow etc on back seat next to dog, jerry cans in rear footwell.
Next step for me are a couple of shelves so I only have to move 1 box to get at the one under it, and clothes bags etc can go on top up against the cargo barrier.
Long items such as the QS self-inflating mattress (SWMBO must-have) go on roofrack.
This may not be very clear, but it works for me
