    Awning recommendations please

    Hello all,

I know this has been discussed ad nauseum, but I could really use your help in narrowing the field of competitors.

I have a 110 Defender with Rhino heavy duty cross bars and want to get an awning that I can mount in such a way that it sits no higher than the bars.

From the pictures I've seen I think this precludes Hannibal and leaves me with either a wing style awning or a side-only type.

For simplicity and cost I'm leaning towards the side awning, and have looked (on-line once again) at the various rebadged versions such as Oztrail, ARB, etc, and I've also seen the Supa-Peg version which sits at about a $150 premium (and I'm not sure why except for the fact that it's made here, as it seems to be exactly the same as the others). Rhino's Sunseeker also looks pretty neat, but again seems to be much the same as all the others.

It would be nice to be able to add sections to whatever I buy but this isn't critical.

Can any of you please steer me in the right direction?

    Thanks in advance.

    James

G'day James, having gone down the same path as you with awnings I decided on the 2.0*2.5m Ironman awning, the reason I decided on this was quality wise they all seemed the same and this model in the Ironman range also has the built in LED light for no additional cost (as far as I saw the only one on the market) very happy so far and the light is exceptional.

    Cheers

    AWNING MOUNT

    Hi there,
My awning sits just below the Rhino bars.
It, a Fiama, is attached to a 105 x 18 painted hardwood backing piece. That is then fastened to four right-angle shelf brackets that I have bolted to the under-side of the bars.
The angle brackets have had a diagonal brace fitted to each. There are two galv hex 1/4" bolts (one inside of brace, one outside) going up through the web of the bar.
The backing timber is secured to the brackets by two galv 1/4" roofing bolts plus washers per bracket.
The timber is needed to bridge the three mounting points of the awning case to the four roof bars.
My bars are 1690 long, so shorter ones may need sliding sideways so that the timber/awning clears the roof.
The outer edge of the awning sits outside the roof-line, but inside the outer edge of the wheel-arch flares.

I also have a 1/4" galv eye-bolt, (shorten the thread- carefully), two square washers and two hex nuts, fitted to the top end of each roof bar, to help with tying top loads off. Note: this is a sandwich type arrangement around the top section of the bar. These eye-bolts are similar but cheaper and easier to align than the Rhino version.
Other than fitting the brackets, there are no holes drilled in the bar web.

    Happy day camping.

James you could go to any canvas guy or gal and they can make up exactly what you want, and of good quality.
