My wife and I spent 9 months travelling with our disco 2. No trailer, no roof top tent. We slept in an oztent all the way and it was fantastic. We also took a small hiking tent used occasionally.
After a few weeks we could setup camp and be having a beer in 4 minutes while watching people with too much gear struggling.
The lees stuff you take the less fuel you'll use and the more country you'll see with less things going wrong.
Not having a rooftop tent meant we always had a setup camp to return to after a days outing and our camping spot was not nabbed by someone else.
But the real advantage was that we were able to take with us a lightweight double kayak and see even more amazing places. For example the gorges through the Kimberly ( away from croc areas!) and rivers in sa and vic.
We had a similar shelf setup to the above (secondhand Fourby Fitout unit). It made accessing all our gear a breeze and with no wasted space once you learned what to put where.

The 50L water bladders were great - means you never need to lift heavy jerry's of water.
The best parts of the country we saw were on foot or by kayak away from anyone. Travel light and leave at home what you haven't used and you'll soon learn what is really needed and what is just maybe nice to have.

I second the tent option over a rooftop. Setup on em are pretty quick, around 5 min once you get used to it & not much longer if its the first she's been out of the bag. I bought a 4 man cheap jackaroo from Kmart on special for $35 & does the job fine.
As said its nice to come back to after a walk or drive, all setup to relax or jump in if pouring rain etc.
I drive a disco 1 & by myself even with the rear seats not folded, can fit spares, toolbox & esky plus chairs & the tent. Anything else needed can go in the back seat such as clothes bag etc. If I had a cargo barrier the whole lot could in the rear but then the esky & toolkit would be on the bottom of everything so kind of a tradeoff with one of those.
With the wife & kids I use the No5 trailer I bought at the start of the year as its light, has a deep tub to fit everything, easy to pack well & get to stuff & it goes anywhere I do no probs. Plus it was cheap to buy over anything else that would do the basics & still they would not go where the No5 would any day of the week!!
