The best solutions include a roll of rubber sheeting with holes in it, or those square rubber mats which clip together. My son found 20 of them chucked out on the roadside in a street cleanup.
Or, if you're a cheapskate like me, go to your local second hand junk shop and buy some old carpet squares for $1-2 each. Yes, the carpet will get filthy, but so what? Just chuck it on the ground when you get home, hose it down and leave it to dry out.
Beats walking around in mud and certainly improves the camping experience.
I have a large piece of shade cloth that we use on the ground doubled over, works well on soggy ground and hoses clean.

I find these hanging storage thingies from Ikea invaluable.
Packs down to nothing, weighs nothing. I hang it off a pole under whatever awning goes up and put all the fruit and vegies in it as well as keys, lighters, etc.

I agree , i see these people that spend 40k plus on a camper trailer or drag a massive van around and think its lunacy - thats a lot of motel rooms.

We spent over $40k on our second one by the time we had a few additions but its money well spent. Everything slides in and out. The kayaks go on the boat loader, folding trailer on the front. Once I get the iSi bike carrier sorted out the bikes will go on the back and within 10 minutes of pulling in somewhere for an overnight stop we can have the tent up and dinner on.

The other plus is they hold their value for good quality Aussie made campers. We had our first camper for 2years and when we traded it in they gave us $6k less than we paid for it so we were pretty happy for that. $3k per year isn't that much compared to hotel rooms.

And I would say where lots go (admittedly not all) there would be a shortage of hotels and motels anyway.
