New Tent time

Another newb question here.. I've only an old small tent that was pre-family, so we need an upgrade.

I've been looking at the following two tents. We will be moving around quite a bit, so quick setup and packup is important. I'll also probably have to assemble whichever one we choose on my own as the wife will probably be flat out chasing the kid However, the dome packs a little better and is half the weight.. and half the cost !

Anyone care to share your experiences? If this is the wrong forum or something feel free to do whatever is needed 8O

    Thanks

I was looking at the Oztent (i think that is the name, One_Iota has one), they are very quick to set up, but they are pricey and they dont pack that small, you would need a roof rack. The bag once they are packed up is about 2mts long.

The trusty dome tent is a lot more time consuming to set up, but they are cheaper, have more room in them, as models are available that have multiple rooms and awnings etc, and they pack up into a small bag. Matt

Buying a tent is like buying a second home.

And everyone has a different definition of home.

    My criteria were:

    Occasionally 3 people.

    More often me alone.

Capable of being erected by me in the dark and in the rain.

    Robust and weather proof.

    I chose Oztent:

    www.oztent.com.au

Greylandy has bought one (a later model)

Downside is that it has to go on the roof the upside is that it doesn't take up any room in side

You can get more m2 for your money with another. Not everyone's choice but it meets my needs.

I've seen those tenst.. they are **really** quick to put up. I don't think I'd have the room, or the money to buy one though

I hoped that the tourer would be half way in the middle.

I have a vague recollection of camping with a three year old and a five year old in a dome tent. We managed. Erection was grounds for divorce at times. But the kids were involved.

Get used to the idea of camping with kids and then spend the big bucks when everyone is used to the idea.

So buy a tent that approximates what you think you need as a family and three years on all will have changed and buy something for the long haul.

Like I said its like buying a 4 bdr home and then the kids leave home so don't spend too much now.

After having tried them all, inc domes, cabins oztents and tourer styles, my choice is the tourer, best pro's versus con's ratio in my book.

Plus buy a well known brand such as Southern Cross or Freedom.

I have had my freedom family tourer for 6 yrs now and it is one of my best camping purchases ever (except for the engel for keeping the beers cold) they are quick to put up and down, strong in adverse conditions and roomy, but like anything of quality they aint cheap.

    Regards Glen.

Aaargg, Cap'n Rightfoot the blaggard pirate..

Umm, I have the tourer tent )or a rip off of same) and find it to be really good

As with OI - we find that erecting the dome tent we also have causes a few really good fights.

And the Oztents do look good but are very exe and about 6ft long so hard to store on a vehicle. The best thing about the website, though, is that when you click on the link above it takes you to their front page with a pic of a Landie (Disco) :!:

Captain_Rightfoot we have tried most tents and have gone the hole hog and bought a roof top tent (howling moon tourer)and have found it the best investment ever. i know the cost is high but considering all the pros it is well worth it.
we spend 2 out of every 3 weekends camping and have found with this type of tent i can set it up or down by my self in just a few minutes while the boss looks after our 19 month old. we get the best nights sleep in a proper bed up top and our daughter sleeps down stairs. my thoughts would be if you are planing on doing alot of camping and moving around alot, the add inital expence is well worth it.

ps. if you look around you can find these second hand at very good prices.
