Oasis Rooftop Tent

I just got an Oasis RTT today!

Waterproof nylon outer. It looks quite strong and is double stitched. It sits taut, off the lightweight inner

Positives:
* super light. I can put this on the car myself!
* ideal for my SWB underpowered diesel. It's so light and easy to manage.
* folds extra thin, so less drag too.
* Seems well made, all seams are double stitched and the nylon outer seems like it will repel the rain.
* all windows have double miggie proof fly screen that you can open from the inside. The front and back windows also let you sit up from inside and see out but are still shaded.

Negatives:
* there's a bit bar separating the two "sides" inside; underneath the mattress. If you roll over without care, you clobber your hip! I think the Thermarests underneath will help fix this though
* no warranty with sale, or instructions

I think this is a great tent if you have a small Landy, or maybe softroader. I'll also mount it on my Defender, but the main reason for this tent is our impending overland trip around Africa in our 2a 88". I can't wait to try it out over Easter!

Sure, have you decided which way you'll orient yours? I'd prefer the ladder to the side but would also like to spread the weight over three rhino bars, not that the tent is heavy or I am fat. When it arrives I will experiment.

I was thinking 2 bars and mounted inline with the vehicle, so the ladder sits on the LHS or RHS. I don't want to obstruct the back door/tailgate.

I thought 2 bars because it has two solid legs that fold out underneath it which you U-bolt onto the bars. This unique feature also lets you unbolt it and put it down on the ground, if you want to base camp for a bit and use the LR without the hassle of folding up and down every morning.

Bugger! yep bought one at a good price in August last year (close to $700) ..for a Cape York trip. They were originally close to $1000...but that was before the mob went broke... there is supposed to be a storm fly which fits over the whole thing. Mine did not come with the matress option.

I've not used it for camping as yet...we ended up buying a bigger RTT from Hervey Bay, and also because the HB tent is totally dust proof when the cover is zipped on for travelling .

BUT, we have removed the tent from the frame and used the base for spare bed capacity when extended family members arrived over Christmas...got compliments as to its comfort:eek:

They appear to have a good following in the US and Europe...

AND, you got it for a GREAT price...:(

I'm very impressed wit this setup also. I would want access via the drivers side aswell, as I've got a supapeg awning that goes 270 degrees around the vehicle. Having the ladder at the back just wouldn't work for me and from what I've seen of the tent not sure how you would go fitting it with the ladder at the side.

I'm looking at the 5.3 family size too.
Please let me know how you guys go mounting this thing up. This will determine whether I purchase one or not.

Just started unwrapping mine. Looks well made alright! Haven't set it up completely due to rain though.
Only negative I have noticed so far is the ladder will have to be replaced, whilst certainly fit for the task in terms of strength and stability, its just too bulky.

Depending how you set it up, the ladder can be simply slid under the tent and stored on the cross bars both for travelling and to get it out of the way during the day while camped... ;)

So I've set mine up next to my 110. The roof bars need to be 38" apart to have the entrance to the side. Thats right on the extremeties of the roof windows-of course Rhino Racks tell you not to put a roof bar where the window is. I think the legs will rub on the seal. Rangie drivers don't have this problem!
I think it'll juuuust fit behind the roof window with the same orientation, it'll hang over the back door but thats no problem.
If the rubber strip on the Rhino Bars is turned upside down the tent legs should nest into it just about perfectly.

EDIT: Rhino roof bars definately won't fit where the roof windows are without cutting and thus weakening the legs. You cannot get the bars close enough together to straddle the window. There is not enough space behind the window to space the bars out enough. I am going to go with the bars behind the window, and rotate the tent 90 degrees. In comparison, an SWB hardtop will not have any problems with bar spacing. Haven't checked my ute cab yet. My tent is set up, it is drizzling lightly, the water is beading and running off, not wet inside yet. /EDIT



Hoges and Gromit, did you get two 'extra' fibreglass poles? I guess they are spares as I can't see where they'd go and the instructions are very helpful ie there aren't any :D
