Just a guess - but I'm thinking they may have similar use by dates as sauces (tomato/BBQ) etc....bottom line though is if in doubt, throw them out...especially if marinating expensive meats.
Hi Everyone,
Long time reader, first time poster
I have a gift pack of Jim Beam Steak Marinades I received about 5 years ago, been sitting in the box ever since in the pantry.
They don't have a use by date on them anywhere so I was hoping the experienced amongst you could advise their approximate shelf life? They have never been opened, in glass jars like the Masterfoods range and have always been in the pantry.
Thanks for any advice.

Throw 'em out? you serious!!! hahaha, If they are high in sodium then your probably right. I'm pretty bad with stuff like this though and if it tastes okay then I go with it.
If they have never been opened you should possibly be okay? and if actually have alcohol in them it helps to keep them safe BUT I don't want to be responsible for you getting gastro so I'd use them but throw them out hahaha...
taste it and if bad spit it. Once it is cooked it should kill any awfullness in it and if separated then.... probably no good also.
if the lid 'pop up button' thingy is still down under vacuum, then I wouldn't have a problem eating it if it looked and smelled ok...
Mate,
It's well and truely Gone off by now after 5 years but I'll be glad to dispose of it for you...![]()
I would say it is probably ok open it and a sniff should tell you if ok have a small taste. They usually are high in sodium and full of preservatives but i would'nt try it for chrissy dinner just in case.![]()
mate if thy are still sealed, try the bottom of the jar, most marinades are like jams and presev's if u dont crack them thay will be fine for years, if u really think hard u will probl'y find that its only been two years and if that isnt the case
" WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH U MAN "
Cheers
if they havent been opened.....and they look alright......then they probably are alright.....
most marinades/sauces are made from vinegar......and as far as i know.....
vinegar is a preservative.......as is the salt and sugar they contain......
so....unless youve left them out in the sun.......they they should be fine.....
todays use-by dates are pretty much just for the packaging.......its a good way to get people to buy more product.......
just ask anyones grandmother about use-by dates......
example......the use-by date for milk was......take the lid off and smell it.....
if it smelled ok.....then it was......
thats just one example......tinned stuff......?
if the tin wasnt swollen....then it was fine.......
bread.....if it wasnt mouldy......it was just fine.....
if it was mouldy......just cut off the bad bit and eat the rest......
get my drift.....?
now.....nuts......well thats a different story......i dont think ive evre tasted weevils......
nor would i like to.......
Thanks everyone. Next BBQ, I'll open 'em up and see how I go.

Food has a "Use by date"?
Well, I never!
I thought it was only off if it stank or was growing fungus.
My family are like that - if it's past the use by date they want to throw it out. Dunno what's wrong with people these days. When I was a lad........![]()
