OzTent,Oz Trail, Black Wolf and some others??

Hi Stevo,

Congratulations on the Oztent, I started typing this before I read through all the pages and realised you'd already bought it, but I'll leave my comments for future aulroians doing searches

When travelling as a family, a quick set up (and pull down) tent is important, because in reality there is only one person to do anything, either you're unloading and your wife is minding the kids, or she's unpacking and you're minding the kids; and the moment anyone in the family needs a toilet break, all work stops

I looked for a family tent last year and narrowed the choice to the OzTent and the Blackwolf

The Oztent is faster to set up and pull down, but it had the following limitations : weight, length, limited head room (the roof angle backs down too soon)

The Blackwolf (I bought a 300 lite plus) offers 3 x 4'5m of floor space, 2 rooms, high roofs, so that it's easy to get changed, <20kg makes it managable by 1 person on a roof rack, it withstands high winds very well

We did a group purchase with the Blackwolf and bought 4 tents at the same time (4 families reached a consensus) Of the 4 tents, 2 were affected by faults - there were a total of 3 warranty related issues Blackwolf were quick to replace the faulty tent in the first instance (holes), and the faulty replacement in the 2nd instance (stitching), however the third instance was a slightly too big fly on another tent, this wasn't realised until it gathered water on a trip* and they were hesitant to replace it, despite the photos showing it compared to the other tents, eventually they replaced the fly only

* it probably held about 40 litres without leaking - so the materials are pretty good

I'd recommend the Blackwolf, but make sure you set it up and examine it carefully as the quality control isn't as good as the design

Also some Blackwolf bags have a handle on the end, and some don't - mine doesn't, but the end handle makes it so much easier to lower from or raise to a roof rack, so try to get one of those

Wow Stevo, your setup is identical to mine right down to the same table! :) We got the rv5 with all the fruit and love it.

How do you go loading the RV 5 on to the rhino? its good to know your stood up well at fraser in strong winds, i have used mine on stockton a number of times and had some slight winds but nothing to serious, the last time we did a fraser trip we go hit but some very last winds that nearly took out our campsite, but the tent we had last time wasnt no where near up to the task compared with the RV5.

Good minds think alike ;). As for loading onto the Rhino...thats no probs with the big "guns" that I have....I maybe only 5'7ish but as strong as a mallee bull....so well I like to think :). But seriously :D......no probs. As you can see it all fits well as per pic below on ferry to Fraser....

What I did find interesting that when breaking camp to leave...the winds were still howling. As soon as I started to undo the fly....the tent lifted up....so the fly must play a part in those conditions....also lowering the front awning almost to the ground helped heaps as well. Otherwise no wuckers....even though wind was nailing us from the side at one stage....inside the front section ( ie side and front panels) there was no wind coming in....was quite amazed. After our uninsured camper burnt to the ground in bushfires we are thinking of getting a RV5 oztent until another camper evolves! Will be getting the foxwing aswell and a few attatchments. This will be earlyish next year (gotta finish house first), was going to see about a group buy. I can get their stuff fairly cheap as my folks use the foxwing on the caravans they build.
I'll be getting the foxwing, RV5 and side walls.
They seem like a really good tent and just love the foxwing for ease of use.

You'll love it....I have used mine on 9 trips this year and hasnt let me down yet. Set up and break down isnt back breaking work......though along with everything else one takes camping can take a little time....but we all have time when camping :).....well most of us ;),

it'll be more for places where i don't want to take the camper (when we get another), but i really love camping with the camper trailer, you can fit so much more beer in;)

We have a Freedom Northern Tourer. As you know when we go on our yearly trips we camp and move every night. The NT is very quick to setup and pack up. However they are heavy and big.

The turbo tents look good we discounted them because they have more fail points... and as our camping is remote we decided against that option.

The oztent is great and quick. However they are HUUUGE when folded and this does cause problems.

You have an unusual requirement too.. as you may be on your own one trip or with the kids the next.

If it was me... from what I know of your situation... I'd just get a simple and cheap dome tent. Get the biggest one you can with just a couple of poles. Cheap, cheerful, relatively quick to set up, and small when packed.

Either that or a tourer type tent. Maybe there just isn't one right solution to this.. they all have positives and negatives.
