It's the generator that probably needs cleaning but it has a very fine piece of wire that runs through it with a very small hook that attaches to the valve/tap. My concern is if I pull this fine wire out, that I may not be able to get it back in

The wire goes through the jet. It is meant to come apart and be cleaned. Unscrew the jet first. It goes over the wire during install.

I removed the generator and pulled out that fine wire. I cleaned the fine wire as it didn't seem smooth as u ran your fingers over it. I hit it with a little steel wool, then cleaned out the generator with some brake cleaner and then put it all back together after fully cleaning it. It appears to be working fine now, so will see how it goes over time.

FWIW: If the stove has been run mainly on petrol or kero, I find that putting a 1/2 tank of Shellite through it every so often keeps the jets fairly clean.
