Hi we just bought a van, 1983 model, assured the fridge worked, sadly it does not. The fridge in question is an Electrolux RM 361.
Symptons are as follows:
Works on Gas (but gives up over 25Degs C.)
Works on 240 (Same as gas ).
Not tested on 12 volt yet but assume simular result.
Freezer worked when outside temp 20 deg. and had ice cubes, fridge walls still felt warm, no way the beer would be cold and any food would have been spoiled.
I have removed the top and bottom vents on the out side of the van and cleaned out all the spider webs and assorted dust and crap, I know they need to breath and a good in and out ventilation is important.
So far no good, I have used the same unit in previous vans and motor home never had a drama in far hotter areas and the beer was still cold and the food still edible.
Can anyone recommend a repairer or extend prior experiance with simular units. We live not too far from Melb C.B.D.
Got to get this fixed for the new year's camping trip, we need the break, been a long hard year for both of us. Escaping from the still living with us know every thing mid 20's kids is high on the agenda!

Andrew, in the past I heard several stories of people turning them upside down and left that way overnight (turned off of course) then turning them back upright leaving for a few hours, then tuning them on.
There is an electrolux repair fellow out near oakleigh/westall road that does full rebuilds etc, ring electrolux and get his number.

methol bromide and kero fridges, what a wonderful mixture ...
but, back on topic, sounds like a low gas problem to me as well...

dont just turn it strap it down on its side and take it for a tow on a less than smooth road, any queensland highway should suffice.
turn it right way up, check that its not shaken bits loose and then crank it up.
if it works but only just its invariabley one of 3 things
the flue is out of whack
the liquids have seperated
its lost the pressure charge
the first two you can fix and the last generally results in no function at all.

I have heard of turning them upside down and about to go an pull it out. Will give that a try first befor spending any $. Will let you know if it works

once again thanks to all for the advice, Rang the Electrolux Service people today and he basicly said the same thing, Tip it upside down give it a bit of a shake up. (As a last resort). Added it might last an hour, a week or if your really lucky a year or two.
Did that and I now have a great pie warmer, so if there are any footy clubs that you know of that need one let me know.
To repair the unit is $650.00
Reco unit $1000.00
New unit $1800.00 (way to much to spend on old van).
Think we will look around for a 240 V bar fridge second hand that fits in the space and take the Waco and an esky or two if we go bush.
Will ring the sellers and describe the prob, hopefully they will have a consience and help fix it. Proberly wont happen but worth a try. We were told fridge works great?
Trouble with these fridges they take a while to work so next time I will ring up and get them to plug the Van in turn on the fridge before I get there.
Live and learn I have had several of these fridges and never a drama.

i through mine out and put in an engel built in (57 ltr), it uses about 30 amps in a 20 hour period
