    4.4. Starter Motor

    The starter motor on my 1985 4.4 is starting to need to use a lot more power to turn over, to the point of running out of herbs in the battery, it's just lucky I live on a hill.

    What is the best solution - rebuild or replace, if replace what star motor will fit?

    Any suggestions.

    I believe a standard rangie one will fit, but you will need a spacer ring to properly fit it.

    Do a search as there have been several threads covering this

    You can use a standard rangie starter on a 4.4 with out said spacer , ive done it and it lasted 2 years with out any dramas till i sold the car

    Just make sure that the starter is the problem.. you could have excessive voltage drop in the solenoid circuit.

    If it clicks and doesn't do anything then your solenoid circuit is ok.. if no click then i'd probably look at the starting circuit.

    As above, a starter motor from a standard Rangie or Discovery will bolt up, better to have the adaptor ring but can manage without. I'm told the nose of the Rangie/Disco starter is stronger than that of the Leyland starter so will last better.

    The starter is held together by two flat head screws. Pull it apart and have a look. Find an old fashioned auto sparky and get a couple of bushes for it. They are quite cheap and easily fitted. If you have forced it too far you may have damaged the field coil insulation, a rewrap with cotton tape from your local haberdashery will fix that. An impact screwdriver is needed to loosen the pole pieces. Much cheaper than a new starter unless you can steal one.

    G'day Capstan

    The Starter parts should be available from folk like Kevin Baker in Qld, KB Classic Parts (07)54 944 221 (not on internet) an quote the numbers on the body of the starter, that will give him the model of the starter, it will possibly need Brushes and Bushes,they are a fairly long lived starter unit from memory it's a Lucas M45G
