    Clutch slave cylinder

    Evening all,

The clutch slave cylinder on my 86 RRC collapsed last weekend. Have fitted an exchange master cylinder, and had the slave cylinder overhauled. Both have been refitted. When fitting the slave cylinder I really struggled to get it back into the bellhousing as the rubber boot was a very tight fit in the opening. Ended up using a bit of grease to help ease it through.

Now for my issue. Have bled the fluid through and cannot get any pedal pressure. Have checked for leaks at each of the connection points (had to replace flexible hose section also due to cross thread (damn tight to change everything without removing exhaust)).

My query is, is it likely the tight fitting of the rubber boot has caused the rod to jam and therefore not take up? Secondly, I need to use the RRC as a daily driver for about 5 weeks until my new vehicle arrives. Would removing the rubber boot for this period of time likely to cause any significant issues?

I intend pulling the vehicle down at the end fo the year to start my project rebuild so can spend a bit more time once it is apart to fix properly.

    Thanks,
    Cameron

Try bleeding the master cylinder at the pipe union, as the cylinder sits up and the pipe union is the highest point and will hole a small qty of air, enough to give no pedal pressure.

i had a similar problem when i replaced the master and slave cylinder on my 86 RRC. In the end i worked out that the problem was that the plumbing between the master and slave cylinder actually goes above the fluid reservoir. This meant air wouldn't bleed no matter where i tried bleeding from.
In the end i had to use a garage hoist to lift the front of the car up high enough that the air could actually escape.

    Hi guys,

Thanks for the responses. Yep, looks like air trapped in the pipe where it goes across the firewall to the passengers side of the engine bay. We tried reverse bleeding, removing the master cylinder, etc, all to no avail. Ended up getting it towed to our local mechanic on Monday. They are still trying to get it to bleed up today.

Apparently Nissan pootrols also have a similar issue where the pipe is above the master cylinder.

Thinking is might be easier to get a hose specialist to insert a bleed point into the pipe at the highest section. Just to save me, and my local mechanic, from future grief.

    Cheers,
    Cameron

    G'day Brick

Have you tried jacking the velicle up at the front, either jacks or ramps, reasonably high so that any air is trapped above the master cylinder slope, and is in the pipe and on the way to the slave, then, with somebody at the slave bleednipple a full pedal stroke and hold down with the bleeder just cracked should expell the air, close bleeder, lift foot 2 nimute wait, and repeat until all air expelled

    cheers

    Hi Brick,
Had the same problem when I did my slave cylinder. solution for me was to apply air pressure to the fluid tank. I just rigged up a small hose to my $10 K mart mini air compressor and roughly sealed it around the top and ran it to about 10psi (at least thats what the cheapo gauge said) had daughter pump the pedal while I bled the fluid at the slave. Took about ten seconds to get pressure at the pedal. I had tried for hours before hand with no pedal. NOt to mention running out of family with tired legs and patience from pumping the pedal.
