    RR Engine Mounts

Hi, I'm a new Classic owner. I've bought a 1985 3.5ltr V8 4-door classic with the Chrysler 3-speed auto. It drives OK, but I've noticed the engine mounts are pretty much shot and I'd like to replace them. Is this hard to do?....how do I do it?

    You buy new engine mounts.
Remove viscous fan blades by getting a spanner the correct size 32MM? Then put the spanner on the nut and bash with a hammer. ( if it has the big nut. if not just undo the nuts)
Now this is the important bit. IT IS A LH THREAD so belt it to the right. If the belts slip stuff some rag between a belt and the the water pump pulley.
    Remove the fan cowling.
Undo the nuts on the mounts.
Jack up the engine with a jack under the sump. I made up special tool number 69 which was 2 pieces of 1 inch square pine in a T shape which I place under the flange at the front of the sump and down to the jack.

This avoids postings like last week where a poster was complaining of a funny rattly noise in the engine which was caused by this exact same exercise , but jacking directly onto the sump.
Pull out the mounts, and replace with new ones. IMHO it will help if you cut off some of the thread on the studs as they seem overly long and make it harder.
    Refit the front stuff.
    Regards Philip A

I'm glad you asked this, as I was going to.

I just bought the same kind of Rangie and while the engine mounts seem pretty straightforward, what about the transmission? Being an auto, is there anything that's going to foul when you jack up the transfer case?

I realise I'll figure it out as I go along anyway but it's always good to hear it from someone who's done it already.

I was referring to the front engine mounts.
I have never seen the rears die on a Classic RR while the fronts die all the time as they take most of the weight.
But AFAIR, you do not have to jack the trans UP like you do the engine as the mount brackets bolt on, you have to take the weight only.

I had extractors on my RRC and the RH downpipe came close to the mount and was heat damaging it.

So I made up a heat shield and slipped that in to protect the mount.

The shield was a piece of aluminium bent into a right angle. One side of the angle shielded the mount and the other side went between the upper surface of the mount and the engine bracket. I cut a slot in that side of the angle so I could slide it over the stud and between the mount and the bracket. It was held in place after the engine mount nut was tightened up.

I have been told to use Jaguar XJ6 (?) mounts rather than RRC as they are apparently better.

Not sure about an LT 230, but LT 95's use the same mounts as the engine. To replace you just support the TC, undo the mount nuts (there is a trick to this with one on the RHS if similar to LT 95 to avoid having to take the whole floor out to get at it......he he), plus you can undo the three bolts holding the brackets to the chassis on either side and remove them as well if it makes it easier.

Installation is pretty much the reverse.

    cheers, DL

Yes, according to Mr. Parts Book the mounts are the same as on the front - when it's an LT230 behind a Torqueflite.

One of the tranny mounts on mine is pretty ugly, and no doubt original.

I suspected it involved what you guys have said, and it's good to hear that the transmission at least doesn't need to be raised. Thanks guys!

    Thanks PhillipA. Very helpful info.

Davo...keep checking back as I work on my Rangie. Fitzroy Crossing is a fair distance from Sydney.

I'll do that. I'm also hoping to post my own info as I go, as well.

You don't actually need to get the Fan off. You can just undo the radiator shroud and let the fan and shroud lift up together.
