Loose battery terminals probably, look at the ends of the cables where they attach to the battery, starter, earth points, then look at the feed cables that go into the car, usually brown about 6mm dia. then under the dash at the ignition switch etc... Use your multi meter to check violtage progressively away from the battery, earthing the meter at the engine block and probing all known battery live points until you have narrowed down the fault area. Look for crispy insulation.
dunno what i done ,but shes up and runnin !!
moved sum wires and crap around and where away,,
reckon a bad earth though tightened up a few connections ..
Check the plug on the end of the ignition switch wiring loom near the base of the steering column. It is a 5 pole plug of which 4 are used.
power to the ign switch (big brown bugger referred to by Bee Utey)
power from ign to "on"
power from ign to "acc"
power from ign to "start"
pounds to peanuts it is a crappy connection (brown power-in wire specifically)at this plug. Another symptom is that you will still have headlights as they are supplied seperately (another big brown wire).
I have cleaned the contacts in mine and used thin cable ties to hold the plug together. No probs since.
