    G'day Knightmayre

If you have had a couple of backfires when the timing was out, the first thing I would be checking is the MAP sensor, as they will warp the flap unit, somebody who is close to you maybe able to check this for you with a known good one.

    cheers

That can also affect the fuel pump as the flap needs to move to complete the pump circuit. Maybe the initial turn of the key is enought to prime the system but the jammed flap is preventing the pump from running all the time........just a guess.

The flap moves when you try & start it, it opens fully when the engine runs. I've also laid on the ground with my ear against the tank listen to the pump- it runs constantly... I've also listened to the fuel filler and I can hear petrol flowing back into the tank.

I had a good look when I got home form work, but couldn't find that vac switch. I'm hoping someone will have a pic of it.

The big backfire I had was an exhaust backfire... the inlet ones I've had have been fairly gentle chuffs with some smoke drifting out.

I had a look at the 3 relays under the drivers seat and found something that seems strange- if ANY of the 3 relays are removed, the fuel pump does not run. Also, I don't know if this is what RR's do, but my fuel pump stays energised. It doesn't switch off unless you turn the key.

    Cheers,

    Dave

Just another thing I have noticed is that my ECU under my seat doesn't have 3 rows of pins, it has 2 rows which doesn't match the one in my manual.

Engine is datestamped Sep 87 and I think the build date was slightly later.
It does not have 02 sensors or exhaust cats.

Fuel pressure regulator? I have seen a failed one on a Volvo 740. I don't know if you have a schrader valve on your fuel rail but it is a good diagnostic to check fuel pressure. It will chage with engine vacuum via the small hose on the regulator at the point where the fuel hoses go on to the rail.

My girlfriend's dad has a 97 disco, and about a month after buying it we had much the same sounding problem.
we checked timing, fuel pressure, spark, you name it. Everything seemed fine.
Turns out the distrubutor was having fun with us.
I've heard rumours that lucas distributors have a way of making the problem seem like anything but itself.
Try swapping with someone who has a bosch.
Other than that, pay a visit to Les Richmond Auto in Thomastown.
Just got my 86 back from him and she's purring like a pussy cat in the sun.

I spoke to Andrew @ LRA last week, he was a bit pessimistic about the distributor. I was actually going to call him tomorrow to see what he says about getting it towed to him if the guy that's coming out to look at it doesn't know.

I'm fed up with it lol
I reckon I screwed something up with the dizzy but I don't know anyone local that would have one spare to test.

Can you tell me where you put them in the files section please?

    Thanks
