    Auto to manual conversion

    Hi,

After my recent cape york trip it seems that I may have stuffed my gearbox.

It gets stuck in 1st when you first start up in the morning and then clicks into gear after a 100 metres or so then is fine.

I am being told that the box is prob tired and i have crap in the governor.

I have been given prices of 4k for a rebuild and 2k ish for a 2nd hand box.

So i am thinking about the option of changing the Rangie over to a manual.

Has anyone done this, can it be done and any idea on cost ?

    Cheers Sean

Yes it can be done and you will probably pay around $500-$1500 for the manual box alone depending upon condition. If you have a classic with ZF 4HP22 you will also have to replace the BW viscous t/f with the LT230 and re-build your consol over the transmission tunnel.

Best bet is a R380/LT230 out of a Disco, make sure you get one with the CDL and lever.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

I would think it would be better to export and reimport your box to Ashcroft in the UK. Rebuild is GBP 675 ie about $1300 plus freight or should be say 2 to 2.5 K all up. Or you could just do the exchange bit and pay GST etc and it probably would still be cheaper than local.

Are you suggesting to export and re-import the ZF 4HP22 so that Ashcrofts in the UK can service it? With an LT77 or R380 yes, but there are people here who can do the ZF autos just as well.

Maybe , but if cost is the issue then it seems to me that Ashcroft are a lot cheaper, and can also upgrade it. Also I would trust Ashcroft more than I trust Australian builders who may occasionally do a ZF, when a very large part of his business is ZF.

This is what I will do if/when mine dies.

ZF themselves wouldn't charge $4000. Have you tried them?

It might even work out cheaper if they can just repair whats wrong with yours rather than a full rebuild.

i converted my auto disco 1 to manual nearly 2 years ago now

i bought a donor range rover that had a LT77 and LT230, and swapped them both at the same time

i also needed to fabricate a frankenstein pedal box from the disco and range rover one, due to a different brake booster on the disco

and had to cut my floor a touch around the gear lever for the lt77, and am yet to make a new console for it
