    89 Rangie vs 88 Patrol

    Hi all,

I am the proud owner of an 89 Rangey Classic which has done pretty well over the last year, the best of which was a couple of river crossings last week that were well over the bonnet. The best thing is that the only mods on it are a 40mm lift and a winch. No snorkel, no big tyres (31" Bighorns), no massive lift and a petrol automatic to boot.

It gets most places my Patrol mates gets, but not all. Which brings me to my next point. I have the opportunity to buy an 89 GQ Patrol, petrol/gas, 2" body lift, 35" Silverstones and a snorkel.

This is where you all come in............WHAT DO I DO!!!

My thinking at the moment is this.....

Buy the patrol and play in the bush with it for a year or so and put the Rangey in the shed and tinker with it.......like tinker with the lift, tinker with the wheels, tinker with the motor or a different motor......pretty much make it a Patrol eater.

I like having the Rangey for the fact that no one else in my group has one. I'm not a sheep with a patrol (yet). Yes people take the **** out of me, but I don't care, and if I had a beast, then that would shut them up.

Then again, I could just sell her and buy the GQ straight away and probably never buy another Rangey again.

    What does everyone think?

    Cheers

    cmon, thats a no brainer.

for the cost of a patrol you could buy all the bits for the rangie, hire a small car to get around in for a few weeks, chuck a few all nighters and put the lift, the tyres and the lockers (or equivelent) into the rangie.

be smart about it and you dont even really need the hire car, buy your replacement gear as it wears out then "service" and "preventative maintenance" it into a monster.

The thing is that my mechanical knowledge aint great at all so it would be slow going. A second car isn't a problem because I have my VT. The Rangey is just a play thing. So having it in the garage to work on at my leisure would suit I think. Then I can buy bits gradually...

I'd be thinking about this a bit differently,,, what's the one vehicle all the others are chasing with thier huge lifts and massive tyres,, what's the car they've all been trying to out perform in comps for years,,,,????
You already have the best base car to start with

Have you been to many comps lately Chops, it seems that everyonje is cahsing Patrols, simply because they are, well, simple and strong, unlike our delicate raniges with their cheesestick axles, and weak diffs etc.

Having said that you can make the axles stronger etc..and have a much cooler car

I just did cape york in my 88 3.5 auto rangie and with my mods and preventative maintenance it outdid all others in my group.

It just kept going, didn't get bogged once (where everyone else did) and made every river crossing no probs. ( using a tarp & WD40 on some).

To be honest i was a bit concerned that something may go wrong probably due to all the crap you get off the other non Rangie driving people, but it showed them all up & i am stoked to say the least !!

Patrols are great but it's Land Rover every day for me !!

Now i've just gotta turn the D40 into a Defender !!

No brainer. I've only had my (Stock) 85 RRC for a couple of months, and done a couple of quick off raod trips with a couple of mates - 1 in an 88 Patrol, and 1 in a 2008 Triton. They are both insanely jealous of the Rangie, and the Triton driver - who was going to buy another Patrol - he had one and sold it to buy the Triton - not sure why, is now thinking of buying a Rangie instead. It's not just the about how good a 4WD they are - and they are a great 4WD - as you said, don't be a sheep - the RR still turns heads where ever it goes.

    Cheers - Gav.

My 87RRC ate my mates as new Patrool.

I suggest you sell your RRC and get the one in the market section here.
Has all the fruit and will eat your friends patrol
