    Daily drive upgrade....

I know I am gonna get caned for this but here goes...

I am about to lose my boring 4 cyl daily drive to my son. This leaves my 1982 two door as the new daily drive.
The RR has a new starter motor, battery and 2nd hand 5 speed box with LT230. Coil ignition with optical points and 2 carbies. Real simple. Also crank handle and good hill to park on. I can fix the electrics if Lucas attacks.

Engine has not been touched since I got it 4 yrs ago, apart from plugs and oil (in the top and out the bottom)

On the sheet aleady are new seals for the swivel hubs. I am thinking of new wheel bearings while I am at it.

I need to make it reliable enough 7 days a week usage. What are the weak points that I should address with preventative work instead of calling the NRMA when it stops. In other words the worst weak points....

I'm sure you will get plenty of responses here, but for me, the electrics are the single biggest problem I have with mine. My 85 has electric everything, so there is always something not quite working right - at the moment, it's the reverse lamps - the switch is not working - probably clogged with gung like most other switches on it. I am slowly sorting things out bit by bit, and I am lucky, as I am a sparky and this sort of thing is second nature for me, but if you have trouble working on electrics, and fault finding, I would have a proffesional look over it before relying on them day in and day out. That's my 2 cents.

    Cheers mate - Gav

If I had to pick on anything in particular go for a dual relay upgrade (hi and lo) for the headlights. Fit a couple of heavy duty toggle switches somewhere to override the headlamp and dip switches if they fall apart. Keep spare parts on board if the optic dissy bits fail. I would get a Scorcher dissy or Bosch converted D1 dissy myself.

Am Ok with the electrics. Not a sparky but ok nevertheless. Have done the low/high relay mod. Works well. Now for the airhorns...
Re the Schorcher..I have heard good about these. More info...

This is where I show the Bosch conversion if you are interested...
Lucas ignition amplifier replacement by Bosch 024
Electrically equivalent to the Scorcher but uses the D1 Lucas electronic dissy with magnetic pick-up.

To make reliable, I get radiator flushed and checked, change all hoses and keep old ones as spares, get carbies rebuild and new belts and keep old as spares.
The rest may never need doing.

Change oils etc and go easy on gear box, they are the weakest of the lot but the 3.5L is not exactly a powerhouse either so should be fine.

Good advice re carbies and hoses etc. The gear box is a R380 with an LT230 so it should outlast the engine.
Anyone had experience with the thermo auto choke? Can they be modded to manual?
