			Air conditioning

					Hi again!

With the onset of warmer weather my wife has suggested that the Rangies A/C needs fixing!

Now I have never seen a Classic with working air yet...can anyone point me in the right direction as to what to do to have reliable air con in my 93?

I'm in Maitland NSW, is there anyone in the area that can be recommended?

 Thanks again,
 Richard.

The main fix is to get into the dash and replace ALL the a/c hoses AND the TX valve AND anything else that's in there because it's a horrible long job to get to it all. A good time to consider a new heater core. And possibly also the fan speed resistor.

					Hi richard,
Which bit isn't working? Is it simply not cold or mechanically not working ie no compressor running and or fan motors blowing?
If its simply not cold get it serviced anywhere.
If it's "mechanical" - (note on the 90> 93 MY land rover finally fitted extra fuses to the main fuse panel)
No heater or a/c check fuse C9
Compressor not engaging check Fuse B7
Condenser fans not running check B8 and B9 (2 fans 2 fuses)

The ac unit is mechanically seperate from the heater - it only shares switching with the heater panel and some relays. These relays are easy to get to and are located in behind the passenger side kick panel.

Check the fuses first and come back!

			Gut the dash time...

					Thanks guys,

Well.... considering that the heater doesn't work either, I guess at some stage I am goin to have to gut the dash. So replacing the hoses etc while I'm there seems like good logic to me.
Would I just take the loose hoses to an A/C place and get new ones made up or are they available in 'standard' lengths do you know?

Just thinking about it...I suppose if I gut the dash, remove the hoses and drive it to a shop they should be able to take care of it from there I suppose, so long as I give advance warning.

Hobbes, the compressor cuts in but no cold air comes out and there are bubbles, oh so many bubbles flowing past the sight glass. What makes me suspect something like hoses is that there is a sticker under the bonnet showing that it was regassed less than 5 years ago.

 Thanks,
 Richard.

Not being an expert but the TX valve has been mentioned as a failure more than once by RRC owners. The fan speed resistor was mentioned because my mate with a '92 RRC had his TX valve replaced, then a hose blew, ( 2 weeks at the shop each time) had that fixed, then got it back without the fan working. The last time he asked me to assist in stripping the dash. The a/c hoses should be easy for the service dude to make, so long as you have samples. As there seems to be gas left it should be taken out professionally first. Probably not necessary to pull out the hoses yourself, just make sure they are all free to pull through. Keeps the system sealed as long as possible.

					Hi richard
My RRC was originally a UK police spec Fleetline so before I imported it I fitted an OE a/c system from scratch - so not an expert but I know where the bits are!
I think we've established two issues. Firstly, there's an electrics issue that simultaneously effects the heater and the a/c; secondly the system needs a regass/service regardless.

It'll save you a lot of cash to isolate the electrics fault prior to taking it to the shop. (If u PM me I'll email you the electrics schematics).

Presuming the fuses are intact and you still don't have a blower motor working in either the heater or a/c unit it's highly likely that it's either the heater/aircon relay and / or one or both of the slide switches on the heater panel - they are the only components common to heater and A/C.

Neither of which involves ripping out the dash!
Pry off the kick panel on the passenger side. Grab a standard change over relay and, with the ignition on and the AC and heater on, substitute the relay 2nd from the front of vehicle – that’s the main relay (the first one is a big diode pack – unlikely to have blown). You can check the other relays as well.
If not, the next step is to check the fan speed motor switch and the A/C & Heater control switch behind the heater panel. You really need a multimeter or check lamp at this stage(?) or you can bridge the switches.

If none of this it's going to be a wiring issue, or a problem with the heater assembly and also the AC TX or whatever at the same time.

 Have fun!
 Chris
