Go for a isuzu 3.9 conversion, or find one in a wrecked county...will be hard but will be worth it.
G'day Davis 4X4
Why not replace it with a 300 TDI as they were a Range Rover standard diesel fittment in the last of the classic rangies 200TDI &300TDI ,none were inported into Australia as the Disco got sales preference, then you would have a 4 cylinder motor,4 cylinder rego, a motor that was originally fitted to a PRODUCTION Range Rover so you won't have the engineering problems, you could also have the option of Auto or 5 speed manual (R380/LT230 T or Q) engine & g/box mounts should not be a prob as the S1 Disco used the Rangie Chassis
That would save the most of your problems as there should be a few wrecked/cheap 300TDI Discos around
cheers
Definitely look for the Isuzu engines, great torque characteristics, but if you're already thinking about a V8 they may not match your expectations. There's a video of the little one in a Classic here: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qN4A8tSZrF8]YouTube - Range Rover Diesel Conversion[/ame]

PS Can anyone confirm whether the 300Tdi / RRClassic is a registerable combination anywhere in Australia?

Definitely in NSW and SA as my mate bought one in NSW and now has it inspected and registered in SA. The only engineering change of note is the front engine mounts on the chassis. Everything else is bolt-on.
