Search function is your friend here my friend.

From memory, a real Schuhler conv comes with a 4.2L here and some writing on bottom of doors.
Not sure about rest but probably same. One lives around my neighbourhood and apart from blowing smoke seems normal.

    G'day 84 rangie

The Schuler company (Schuler Presses) was taken over by another company and is now part of "Overfinch" the bespoke Range Rover specialists,If you google Overfinch try www.overfinch.co.uk they are in Leeds, and by emailing at the contact they may be able to point you in the right direction

    cheers

    Hi Jason,

This info comes from the excellent range-rover-classic.com site & my own archive:

The Schuler Range Rovers were built by Schuler Presses in the UK. After 84 the company became Overfinch.
You could buy a full conversion known as the Super Ranger which had the viscous coupling, torque flite box, anti-lock brakes and a mildly reworked 3.5l rover motor. The clever bit was the viscous transfer case and the anti-lock brakes both of which were also used in the Jensen FF sports coupe of the day.
The viscous coupling is very similar in design, but entirely different part wise, to the borg warner viscous coupling fitted to range rover after 1989. It did have one major difference in that it splits torque 37/63 rather than 50/50 so improving handling.
You didn't have to order every bit of the conversion.

In Australia, British Leyland Australia imported RRover as CKD kits from 79-83 to avoid 150% tax. they also offered an automatic option/conversion from 1980 - 3 years prior to the official auto Range Rover. Other companies such as Off Road Automatics of Hornsby NSW had offered an auto conversion as early as 1977. From 1983 on JRA ltd took over importation of RR into Oz, briefly continuing CKD builds.

There are actually quite a few Schuler RR in Australia - mainly auto conversions with transfer box only. My guess, and hopefully someone can confirm, is that the Schuler conversion was licensed and sold by either BLA/JRA as a special conversion around this time...

If yours is a Sydney assembled RR the vin plate will say assembled by JRA limited.

However, the fact that you've got a "special" build plate is really interesting +the script down the doors + that it's a 84. It almost sounds like a demo vehicle and I have a vague recollection of seeing a RRC plastered in Schuler stickers in a Oz magazine test. If that's the case you may have a "full house" conversion - does it have a modified dash, ventilated antilock brakes, recaro seats by chance?? Maybe twin shocks at the rear?

The 5.0l motor is an odd one though. The P76 had a 4.4l displacement achieved by a taller block and stroker crank. Schuler tried them and gave up. And that was pretty much the limit for that engine at the time without serious race engineering. TVR subsequently developed a 5.0 motor for the TVR Griffith in 1993.

The Schuler Range Rovers were well ahead of their time, and even if it's just the transfer box conversion its a special bit of kit. Trouble is - no spare parts! just make sure as a new owner you change the oil...!

    good luck mate!!

    Thanks for the info Hobbes,
will have a look at the vin, etc. It does not have ventilated brakes, when I get a chance I'll take some pic's. Thanks again.

Looked at a Schuller Range Rover in Brisbane about 1990 that was for sale in a used car yard. This particular one was fitted with a 5 litre Holden v8. Dealer was convinced it was a Schuller option. This was in a yard which sold a lot of Range Rovers.

Yup - highly likely. Fitting the Chev big block was the next stage for Schuler/Overfinch fom 1984 on. They did a 470, a 500, and a 570. Early ones on 4 barrel Carter carbs, later ones on EFI.
