Good luck with your ongoing searching.
Next time you see one with a clunky gear-change, get underneath and check the driveshafts for loose/corroding universal joints. These can make an otherwise sound g/box appear to have problems. Replacement driveshafts aren't expensive and are _easy_ to fit.
