    93RRC Ign Key Barell removal?

Quick question, is it possible to be lazy and remove only the key barrel and not the steering lock and replace with a new barrel?

Im familiar with the process of removing the shear bolts and replacing the assembly but would prefer too only change the barrel if possible

which brings me too today events. My father set off this morning in his 89 RRC to do a couple of odd jobs. Halfway down greenmount it suffers an LPG back fire and grenades the afm...... So along come the RAC onto the tilt tray and back home again...............So he borrows my 93RRC, get too his first stop,
Tries too restart the car after doing his business, Key turns no ignition/crank/anything..... So dad fiddles around and determins the barel isnt rotationing the IGN switch. Turns out he's right, So calls out RAC again RAC guy just happens to be an EX Rover mech and promply Jerry rigs the car to get it home.(nice job Jason from th RAC)

So the current score is 89 down waiting for a borrowed AFM to be fitted tommorow (BIG THANKS TAFF!!) and the 93 is down awaiting a replacement ign barel and possibly steering lock (hopefully too be sourced tomorow.....)

All in all not a great day for RRC in Perth

    AND in further news ....

Bought a brand new Borg Warner TC output shaft from the main stockist that happens to reside in the same suburb as myself .... that led to a round the corner trip, to Supercharge battery warehouse ....

They quickly saw the horrifying site of a foreign branded battery hiding elusively beside the radiator and were quick to respond with a good dose of a cure, in the way of Brand new replacement

And it's no joke, folks ... go see them ... The price difference is just Excellent

On other fronts ... A 27mm socket was purchased

It's been a totally top day for Rangies, this way

Lucus .... haven't done the rangy yet ....but in general ...

Usually to just get the key barrel out ... you look for small hole in the side of the casing ... Usually you have to put the key in and turn to the ACC position .... Then insert a pin in the hole and push the release pin of the barrel UP ... then withdraw the barrel from the casting

    Cheers
    Mike

OK ... found 1 part in the Electrical section ... The "Key barrel" turns the "electrical connector" via a "square key rod" (youve seen them before at the bottom of other barrel's)

At the bottom of the barrel casting, at the electrical socket, is a rubber boot ... Remove this boot ... you will also see a small phillips head screw on the side of the casting ... remove screw and the electrical socket will fall out ... You can then see the square key rod

I recon the electrical plug itself has gone Cuput / Not the key barrel itself

... Also my 93 has been "Jerry rigged" because of this failure

Now to look for the key barrel removal procedure .....

Well .... I had a look .... and was referred back to the above in the electrical repair section ... I think you remove the screw, and then ignition barrel falls out the back also ...

Let me know if that works ...

From Memory and if its the same as an 82 if u remove one of the sheared bolts holding the lock assy/key barrel ign switch there wil be a grub screw down inside remove it and the barrel should come out. I think its the shear bolt on the right hand side

    Hi,

The key barrel won't be the problem......... it'll be in the contacts in the ignition switch on the LHS end. The switch can be removed by removing one tiny philips grub screw without undoing the whole lock assembly (which will be an angle grinder job if it is the original and the shear bolts are, well....... sheared).

With a bit of care and nouse you can get the switch apart, re-do the contact dimples etc, for a temporary fix you may get a couple of years out of. The most important things (if you do this) is to make sure that the end of the switch is held firmly in place in its housing (to maintain proper contact inside) and to make absolutely sure that there is no chance of wiring shorts with the binnacle metal mounts.

A whole new lock unit, new keys, etc is only about $180 from here:

eBay Australia Shop - Classic Land Rover Range Rover:

He's on holidays however. You can't buy the switch alone new anywhere.

A faulty (worn) switch will cause all sorts of weird ignition probs, most notably firing while cranking then no spark on run. Don't ask how I know.

    cheers, DL

Guys appreciate the advice but the ign switch is fine. the barrel has disintergrated internally and won't release the key. the car functions fine when started by turning the switch with a screwdriver.

Literally need just a new key and barrel!

EDIT: can source a new setup locally
so it's no issues except the price!
